Sealant experts tremco illbruck have contributed to a striking new-build project that’s been named RIBA’s House of the Year 2017.
Esteemed architects James Macdonald Wright and Niall Maxwell designed the striking building, working alongside construction specialists Westgreen to bring it to life.
Inspired by the traditional oast houses of Kent, Caring Wood revives local building crafts and traditions including locally sourced handmade peg clay tiles, locally quarried ragstone and coppiced chestnut cladding. The house comprises four towers, with interlinking roofs that echo that of other oast houses in the distance.
The designers incorporated an array of high-performance sealant products from tremco illbruck into the build, ensuring the finished property will offer outstanding energy efficiency, weather resistance and acoustic insulation for years to come.
These included the firm’s SP525 low modulus sealant, able to offer sound reduction of up to 61dB alongside high movement capability and excellent primerless adhesion; the BBA-approved TP600 impregnated joint-sealing tape, guaranteeing weather-tightness even when subjected to the severest storms; and the UV-resistant and Euroclass B fire-rated EME010 breather membrane.
tremco illbruck Product Manager David Naylor commented: “We were absolutely delighted to take part in such an ambitious and distinctive project – and even more pleased when it won this prestigious accolade.”
“We knew when we were working on Caring Wood that it was something special. The project team were looking for a lifetime of best-in-class performance, and the fact they came to tremco illbruck for that is a huge vote of confidence.”
RIBA’s House of the Year is awarded to the best new house designed by an architect in the UK. Shortlisted projects and the eventual winner are all featured in a special episode of Channel 4’s Grand Designs, hosted by Kevin McCloud.
